Dave's Picks 2013 Subscription

This subscription will end at 11:59pm PST on 1/22/13.

Last year's Dave's Picks succeeded far beyond our own expectations and became a true fan favorite, with each volume selling out in a matter of weeks. Now's your chance to become a Dave's Picks 2013 subscriber. Not only are you guaranteed all four releases for 2013, you get free domestic shipping plus the ultra-happenin' Subscribers-Only Bonus Disc that will be mailed with one of Lemieux's choices - in 2012, the Bonus Disc, sent out with Dave's Picks, Volume 2 was a fantastic collection of tracks from the July 29, 1974 show at the Cap Centre in Landover, Maryland. All Dave's Picks releases are mastered from the original tapes by Jeffrey Norman and include an informative and fun booklet containing notes about the show and archival photos. The good news is that an extra thousand copies of each release will be pressed to accommodate the heavy demand. The 2013 Dave's Picks releases will be numbered and limited to 13,000 units each. Dave is promising some great things for 2013 - so don't be left out!

Hey now. For those of you who prefer print to video or who are just tired of seeing me babble away beside the water (likely the latter...), we figured we'd write a few words about Dave's Picks 5, and what's ahead. The long and short of it is that if you're inclined to pick up Dave's Picks 5 and/or the 2013 subscription, you're in a for a huge treat. The first show, 11/17/73 at UCLA, is a major, heavyweight Grateful Dead show, one of the best of any year, and being top-of-the-heap from the 1973, that's saying a lot. It's one of these shows that every time I've heard it in the past decade+, I've wondered why it's not been released. I almost feel a need to apologize for taking so long -- 40 years! This is really prime Dead. First set material worth noting is one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set features the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes, with every second of it exciting and interesting. And they top that off with a late-show "Eyes Of The World" that is remarkably hot and energetic. I say this without hyperbole, but to my ears and many others, this is a top-40 Grateful Dead show of all time. And the sound quality of this one is perfect, full, clear, great bottom end, and overall terrific.

We don't have much planned beyond DP 5, but I've previously hinted about a major batch of 1969 and 1970 tapes that were recently returned, and we hope/expect to get some of that out in 2013. I'm not trying to be coy or cryptic on the contents and possibilities, but we're in the midst of backing these tapes up and sorting through them. Once this is complete, we'll know what we have. What we've heard so far has shocked us in its excellence in terms of performance quality, song list, and sound quality. So, if you like peak-era Grateful Dead, with huge versions of major songs that you (and we!) have never heard before, this lost-batch of tapes is for you. Expect news on that within a few months.

- David Lemieux

Unveiling Dave's Picks Volume 6

We're really bad at keeping secrets around here so just imagine how hard it's been for us to contain our excitement about the 2 now complete shows, once missing reels for more than 40 years, that have been selected to make up Dave's Picks Volume 6. The first major return of material to the vault since 2005's Houseboat Tapes, Dave's Picks Volume 6 will feature 2 complete shows with never-before-heard material from 2/2/70 Fox Theater, St. Louis, MO and 12/20/69 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA. Long a mystery, the riddle of the 2/2/70 set list has now been solved and the music restored to its proper - and spectacular - sequence. 2/2/70 is also notable as the first show without Tom Constanten. Tom, however, makes his return to give his first-hand perspective on 12/20/69 in this volume's liner notes. Pigpen fiends, ask and you shall receive. Both shows feature loads of Pigpen including a major 35+ minute "Lovelight" from 12/20/69. Recorded by Bear with an excellent mix and sound quality, this very special release feels like a return to the classics.

If you've been curious about the subscribers-only bonus disc, this one is the stuff of lore as well. Like Dave's Picks Volume 6, the last-ever Grateful Dead show at the Fillmore Auditorium - 12/21/69, was once missing reels, but we've acquired the elusive first reel to go with the end of the show that we've always had. This jam-packed CD, featuring 75 minutes of music (almost 40 minutes of never-before-heard), includes one of only three versions of "Smokestack Lightning" from 1969. You most certainly won't want to miss out on this highly collectible Dead!

The only way to guarantee you'll get these historic releases is to get a Dave's Picks 2013 subscription. The subscription offer ends January 22, 2013 at 11:59PM PST, so grab one while you can!

I'm among the chorus of those who desire more releases outside of the Keith and Donna era. Volume 6 was what convinced me to get another subscription.

Even though, none of the choices for the first 5 would have been among my first choice personal picks, volumes 2 and volume 4 have grown on me.

There is a virtually untapped resevoir of great shows between '84 and '88 that are just as good as the best shows of any other era. It's a time when the Pheonix fell into the fire, to rise back up, into the highest triumphant glory.

For those of us who try to collect everything that comes down the pipe, it would be nice to have a fuller representation of the bigger picture.

The best part of the subscription is the mystery factor.
The worst part is knowing that you'll probably get something not quite to your liking and will regret that purchase.
Bonus Disc - a unique feature of the subscription deal, a carrot for the wary.
If you have your subscription you would have bought the discs when they were released anyway.
Interesting that a link for the single purchase of the DaP5 is absent.
So 9 days until the sounds of '73 ring throughout the land as joyous heads blast the cosmic message across the airwaves.
When the new JGB disc, (finally) is released, the overall joy factor will be massive.
Now we wait with baited breath, on the upcoming announcement of this year's vault release.
2012 - Spring 90
2011 - Europe 72

Here's another vote that the Powers That Be MAKE the SunShine DayDream DVD a reality/priority.

And if the Greek Theatre does not get some kind of official release within the next few releases then the
whole thing is underperforming, also some Europe 90 tour shows would be nice.
And what about Cal Expo sets.

or SanFrancisco Civic performances

And What about a 1990 NYE boxset (w/video)

How's about Shoreline 95 ?

or just some Avalon Ballroom stuff or ?

But in retrospect the hundreds of hours of GD music already available are so sweet that adding more is just overkill, but just keep'm coming cause the end may be near but just got to hear the Dead jam one more time, before we cash it all in.

Long Live the Grateful Dead

and if you want to hear some live dead and your in Long Beach Ca on a Friday night, come by the Golden Sails Hotel and catch Cubensis.
You will thank your self in the morning.

subscription works for me

I can understand how some might be leary of subscribing without knowing what the releases will be. Dave won me over in one of his videos last year and that sold me on the subscription. He seems to really get it and I trust his judgement. I couldn't have been (much) happier with the first four releases.
This time around I must admit that I'm not a big fan of Pigpen and for the last decade or two have listened mostly to the Godchaux era of Grateful Dead. Still, there was a time I listened to everything and maybe DaP6 will inspire me to get back into the 60s a little bit, the listening party certainly sounded great. Funny how you can hear how black Jerry's hair is.
Unlike Antonjo, I'm desperately hoping that volumes 7 and 8 are both from 73/74 and more fall of 73 would be fantastic, Feline Field anyone?
But if Dave must release a mid 80s show the Carrier Dome 84 would be a nice choice. A wonderful Shakedown and this is a show Dave seems to like.
Almost forgot to mention that by getting the early bird subscription you save close to enough money that you break even if you like three of the four releases. I'm not generally a fan of the bonus disc format but this year's bonus disc seems somewhat relevant being previously unheard material. I'd prefer something along the lines of an extended soundcheck for the bonus disc.

More 84 - 87

Here's another vote for more shows from 84 - 87. 3 of those years are awaiting their first official live release! Heck, I might as well request 3/22/85: burning Scarlet->Hell and a most beautiful post-Terrapin jam. :)

subscription

A subscription is a subscription. One never knows which articles are going to be in the magazine, who will be on the cover, which writers will contribute or change, where the comic book storylines are going to go. In fact, Dave didn't even know halfway through last year what the final two would be.

You take a chance, and get free shipping & a bonus disc for taking the chance. I like not knowing (even if the Dave's 2 announcement did tip the balance for me).

My personal beef is that by subscribing I'm forced to buy another Fall '73 release, since I've got a shelf-full already and would prefer any number of other releases (including earlier in '73). But I want the '69/'70. The quarterly no-thinking-required packages are fun to look forward to, and come home to. And, of course, 11-17-73 will be superlative music.
But if there isn't something between '84 & '87 in the last two releases, I'm done. (His threats have proven hollow, but he makes them again.....)

for each of the two DaP's subscriptions so far, we have known the contents for both the first 2 releases and the bonus disc before the deadline, leaving only the final 2 releases as unidentified...that's not bad in my opinion. these releases have been first class in every way so far, and i've no doubt that while they may not be what i would have chosen (80/90) the ones we dont know about yet will be likewise of quality

torrent

I believe the record company's argument against sharing after selling out of the limited edition release is that it would deter sales-- people would wait until they can get the music for free. I can see that point, but limiting releases to 13k means only 13k people are going to be able to enjoy the wonderful 1969-70 tapes that were just unearthed. I assume more people are interested than that. Alas....I think this is the way Rhino is going with these releases.

reason to hate

lets look at the south's record....

the deep southern states are among the poorest, most obese & least educated states in the union. the economic inequality in these states is staggering. the southern states constantly preach fiscal responsibility & a weak central government, but receive far more federal aid than they pay in taxes.

despite preaching the pro-life message, states such as alabama & mississippi consistently deny access to affordable healthcare to women. when you combine that fact with the high poverty level, morbid obesity rate, and overwhelming number of teen pregnancies, its no wonder these states have higher infant mortality rates than some third world countries.

but what offends me the most, despite cloaking themselves in christianity these states completely ignore the teachings of jesus christ. i'm not even sure what to make of mattthrelkeld's post. how pathetic & hypocritical to say the south needed a good looking, well spoken, educated black man to teach them decency? we're talking about a culture that treated dogs better than black people for centuries. how hard is it to treat all god's creatures with respect?

I, too did not take the bait

on the subscription, I think 69 is a great year, and at the end of the year to boot, and what I've heard of 2-2 is all excellent. That being said, I still haven't a clue what the set lists are for these two shows or the bonus disc, does any one else know this info? If it's unheard, what is it, first set material? Why not let us know what we are paying for, Rhino asks for the money up front, why can't we get the info up front? I just don't know what I am getting for the 120 bucks. And I agree with eyes, why the limited stuff? I guess Rhino just does not want to take a chance of having any stock left over. The entire marketing concept is questionable to say the least.

tough call

This was a tough call for me. Subscription or not. Being a huge Pigpen fan, the information on DP6 really tempted me, but in the end I could not commit to the subscription. I would be so very disappointed if the next release was a 91 show. With a young one at home, I have to really consider what releases I purchase and I have to go a la carte, rather than full-in.

Now I have to hope that #6 doesn't sell out before I can order it a la carte. Going on record that I do not care for the limited edition nature of these releases. Why should we have to buy now if it is not feasible at the moment for any multitude of reasons? It is too much of a marketing ploy to sell now. To me, it should be like books or old vinyl-- first editions worth more in the collectible market, but that doesn't mean they stopped at one edition if it sold well. Print additional editions until there is no market and 30 years down the road those first editions will be worth more than the 3rd. Just my 2 cents.

Enjoy Pauley Pauvilion all.

If you could kindly file this request into the acknowledged, but very likely unfulfilled department- Can the Bonus Disc please have it's own single disc digipak? The cardboard sleeves are ample, and perhaps they're preferred. But Dave's Picks packaging is digipaks- it seems to reason the Dave's Picks Bonus Disc should be this also. But perhaps then again no...

Matt,

Honestly, I read Fox's comment as a sarcastic indictment of the NRA ~ since we obviously know what Dr. King would have against guns. The humor may've been a little dark, but I took it to be at the NRA's expense rather than MLK's.

I could be wrong, of course. Let Freedom Ring.....but alongside it, Peace.

Subscription and sales tax

Did anyone else out there pay a subscription in November/December & get ripped off for US sales tax even though they live outside th USA (UK in my case)?
This also happened on a couple of CD orders and that wasn't really a problem, Customer Services were really helpful and I was charged on the day the CD shipped and refunded the sales tax the day after. For the subscription I've been e-mailing Customer Services since 15 Dec when I was charged and they've gone from 'dealing with it' to the ridiculous statement that I'll get a refund when the order 'ships' - so how do you you 'ship' a subscription?? Do I get my refund when they ship Vol 5 jn a couple of weeks, or when they ship Vol 8 in November (and they've already had my $23.19 under false pretences for 5 weeks)? Or perhaps they've heard the discussion on whether the UK should leave the European Union and think we might be about to become part of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, or Virginia?

Setlists

From what I've read and heard, the Grateful Dead never really made a setlist. I read something recently about when Brent first joined the band, he kept asking what songs they were going to play for his first show but nobody ever gave him an answer. He then stated he finally realized that nobody even knew what songs they were going to play until they got on stage.

dave's picks sells out.

when you consider the fact that all 4 previous "dave's picks" sold out, it doesn't make much business sense for rhino to push the subscription so hard.

perhaps they plan to release some shows from the mid '80s, or even the vince era later this year, and they're afraid of getting stuck with extra copies.

personally, i don't think thats their reasoning. rhino could probably release the worst grateful dead show of all time, and still sell 12,000 copies. especially, if they packaged it with some cool cover artwork, and interesting liner notes.

while i have your attention, does anyone know how the grateful dead chose what to play each night? was the setlist a collaborative effort, or did jerry / bobby pretty much lay down the law?

Perhaps some folks will be unhappy to hear Dave say "It's really not a focus any more of our selection process" to look for stuff people haven't heard. Not me, I didn't think that was ever a particularly good criterion.

@wurm79 - thanks for the advice - that's what I've been doing and they say they don't know what is going at the warehouse. I also emailed the deadnet address - and they have contacted the warehouse. Sounds like everyone is doing their job - except whoever they use as a warehouse. They have been less cooperative - it's almost like they only have one part-time employee. I'd expect this kind of customer service from some places, but after 35 years of dealing with GD newsletter and online I've come to expect better of them.
