Dave's Picks Volume 5: UCLA 11/17/73 CD - SOLD OUT
sku: GRA9900093
Dave's Picks Volume 5 is officially SOLD OUT.
"UCLA, basketball, and the Grateful Dead — it all rolls into one. Teamwork, creativity, imagination, electricity, fundamentals, physical fitness, speed and quickness, the fast-break, dexterity, flexibility, footwork, crazy fingers, communication, discipline, the beat, rhythm and pace, offense, sacrifice, structured freelance, soaring through time and space, a dream, vision, and a plan. Never had such a good time." - Bill Walton
If November 1973 is considered one of the best months in Grateful Dead history and 11/17/73 is widely considered one of the best shows of the month - if not the year, then Dave's Picks Volume 5 is sure to score major points as the first quarter of 2013. Dave's Picks Volume 5, or as liner note scribe Bill "Grateful Red" Walton puts it - "a three-CD package of life, love, and hope, with over three hours of glorious music, and a set and song list to dream about," is major heavyweight Dead.
A stunner of a show, the band come out blazing with phenomenal renditions of new material from the recently released Wake of the Flood, unconventional set starters and some of the finest playing of the year. The first set features one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever - widely regarded as one of the Top 3 versions of this song ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set shines the spotlight on the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes (the 2nd of 3 times they did this sequence), with every second of it exciting and interesting. And they top that off with a late-show "Eyes Of The World" that is remarkably hot and energetic. To the ears of many, this is a top-25 Grateful Dead show of all time. And the sound quality of this one is perfect, full, clear, great bottom end, and overall terrific.
Mastered from the original analog tapes in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman, with fresh and fabulous cover art by Grateful Dead Comix artist Tim Truman and first-hand insight and wisdom on that very day from UCLA Basketball Center and student Bill Walton, this one is, by all accounts, incredibly satisfying.
A friendly reminder that Dave’s Picks Volume 5, like those that came before it, will sell out and fast. Your best bet is to pre-order it now!

excellent news.
Mustin, I don't know if you were referring to my comments, but I don't say much that I'd call negative. Ordinary, yes, even though I understand that calling any GD concert ordinary is an oxymoron. I'm assuming the context is understood. If you want negative, ask me how I feel about Dick's Picks 25, LLR, or a certain bellow that causes me to cringe during versions of PITB recorded in the 70s. You could call me elitist and you'd be correct. I want the extraordinary. That's what the band wanted, too. So I am willing to wade through the official releases, waiting for moments that move me. They don't come often enough sometimes. Dave is doing a great job serving his corporate masters. The archival series is successful or it would stop. I'm happy to support that. I'm also glad people have different opinions about this music, and I love reading what Deadheads have to say. It's an exchange. It would be awfully boring if everyone loved every note played. I want to hear WHY people like stuff, rather than blanket cheerleading.
Got it today ;o}
Listening to Jack Straw at breakneck volume in rapt anticipation.
Phil is ramping up......
Thanks to the responsive team to correct my problem.
You guys don't hear it often enough when you get it right,
and I got to say you fixed my problem AGAIN.
I must tell marye and Dr. Rhino.
After I have my sandwich ;o}!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Truth is realized in an instant, the Act is practiced step by step.
I guess I've always been confused by the negative comments about the releases that have been put out the past few years. I understand that not everybody is going to like them but for someone to like the Grateful Dead enough to follow their every release, then complain about how it isn't the best thing they've ever heard or wasn't nearly what they expected, doesn't really make sense to me. There is no middle ground. It's like someone being lucky enough to hook up with a victoria secret model and then complaining that they didn't cook you breakfast. Can the next Dave's Picks please come with a free breakfast?
I wouldn't trust me either. I certainly wouldn't do what most people seem to want. I'd be off the bell curve for sure.
I dont think I'd trust you picking a release...but then again, I enjoy the full shows....
I don't know if I'm going to be able to hold out the 2 weeks 'til my GarciaLive gets here. Maybe it's time for me to dust my old Hempstead tape off. I checked out Catfish John on the listening party and it was right where it's at...
checking out every possible interesting trail down which the song might go. I just love that. My first, and life-changing, Jerry show was about 10 months after this show, so I think I'm imprinted with this style. But it was only a few notes in that I recalled the deathless words of some girl in line at the Keystone:
"I need to go see Jerry and get my priorities straight."
Take me back to another mornin'
to a time so long ago,
When the sweet magnolia blossomed
cotton fields as white as snow...
I totally agree. I got to listen to it straight through over the weekend and it really took me back. Also, he sounds so darn happy on it...
If you're not getting speedy resolution, send me a PM with the details and I will ask the good Dr. Rhino to get on the case.
Got my Garcia Live CD yesterday (less than a week after ordering it) and I am enjoying the laid-back, funky warmth of a Jerry show. How sweet it is indeed.
A subjective topic, for sure. I have found that my opinion will change about a show over time. I will hear something differently-for the good or bad or my context will change and it is like I haven't really heard it before. When I'm REALLY dialled in while jogging woods trails I can really hear the ideas developing-I guess because I'm so focused on the here and now-plus making sure I don't break an ankle! Over-all I have found that even on some shows that I think are mediocre I still appreciate having them because the sound is better than archive and I may get that show or part of it at some point and enjoy something and see why someone-Dave or Dick, etc thought it was deserving of a wider listen. I have said before we are lucky fans-we have a largesse here that we can enjoy, diss, fight over, debate over, obsess over, speculate over-to our collective hearts' content. That is unique and appreciated. Let the debate continue.
And what'd ya know?
It arrived this morning!!
Thanks
The main reason I ask is I don't trust DHL much. I have had packages through them ended up in Eastern Republic of China, France and not turning up at all for the last year. Just recently I ordered three high class microphones here in Sweden, which where sent by DHL/UPS. The package is totally lost in the mail and can be anywhere in the world by now. Lucklily II'll get a replacement package this week ... unless that package will also be gone forever ...
I have a friend working at the local DHL depot and he tells me stories on how packages sent within Sweden winds up in Argentina and all around the world. So I guess I get a bit worried every time I see something being sent through DHL ...

Hi Micke,
I'm in Dublin, Ireland and I'm still waiting too.
Hopefully it will arrive soon.

Although I received a shipping notice January 26, I did not receive DaP5 either. Might be due (at this particular moment) to Carnival which is celebrated heavily in the catholic area where I live in the south of the Netherlands, but 20 kilometers north and 30 kilometers south it has arrived last week...
My copy also was shipped around that time and I'm still waiting in South Australia. DP2 took nearly 4 weeks, and DP4 was only 5 days, so I'm just waiting and hoping it will be here each day.
Nice synopsis, Rosebud. I'd say:
#1 - Series starts with a yawn. Put the headphones on and it's groovy, nothing more. Last on my list for official '77 releases.
#2 - I really didn't understand this one. No Other One nor Dark Star? Again, something to listen closely to for details but generally not moving.
#3 - Nice to hear Keith's first tour. Lots of great moments, especially Comes a Time and the big jams. Why is that Truckin' on there?? Pee-yew.
#4 - Already had the Playin' jam from '76 bonus disc. Help>Slip>Frank is interesting, then ridiculous. Love the Eyes, but the show is just reliable.
#5 - Pales in comparison to some others from Fall of '73. I'll plug it in again sometimes, but not often.
#6 - Who knows? I think this one will be a winner.
I'm not a whole-show purist by any means. I'd rather the chaff stay on the cutting room floor. Of course, one man's chaff is probably another man's wheat. But why? Hey, just let me pick the goodies. Trust me.
My copy of DP5 was shipped on January 26th through DHL Global Priority ... and I'm still waiting as of February 12th.

Hola Fellow Travelers -
Like rne and evgraham I received my DP5 and Garcialive 1 on same day. One of the good sides of being an older guy (53) is not only did I get to see plenty of shows in all the configurations since 6/74, but I have purchased every single official release. I've always done this as a "thank you" for the ability to access via taping, trading, and, now, downloadning and streaming, such amazing music.
In that context, I would place DP5 in the very upper pantheon of official live releases - - for me, it is on the level of Dicks 2, 4, 16, 19, LIve Dead, Complete FW 69, Complete E72, RT V.2#3, and GDDS3. Of course, that is only one man's opinion and other's have equally valid as so many factors such as when first turned on to the Boys, personal attendance, tapes/CDRs collected, etc etc. Anyway, this Pauley Pavillion show is just perfect in so many ways: era, song selection, band line up, recording, remastering, and a terrific liner note by The Big Red Dead Head (I'll never forget watching the Trailblazers winning locker room when Brent Mussberger interviewed Bill Walton - when asked how he expected the Trailblazers to do the next year, Bill said "Depends on how many Grateful Dead shows I get to thissummer"). Anyway, for me, Disc 2 should be required listening for any person who loves music. Period.
I haven't listened to the Jerry Show yet, but am pumped. The After Midnight:2/28/80 is superb, and I was lucky enough to be on an internship in DC in 1979-80 and so got to see the first show of this mini-tour at Lisner Auditorium at GWU in D.C. I remember wondering about the kjeyboard guy and those weird sounds he was making. Anyway, this should be good.
MR> LEMIEUX - Thank you for yet another in a very long line of successes.
It's time - Davey COncepcion for Hall of Fame
PS - Happy MArdi Gras!
PSS - Happy Pitchers & Catchers Report Day!
For me, I think #2 is by far the best, and maybe because of its consistency. I love the Eyes (with some Tighten Up riffing early on before vocals), and I think the China Rider is under-rated. Seems to be a show with a lot of visceral energy, so sloppy here and there is part of the high energy level. There's no end to Summer '74 wonder, for me anyway, and so #2 along with the bonus disc is what I have played the most.
I love #3, I think '71 Dead is rockin' heaven (and that Ladies And Gentlemen is the single best archival release.) I think The Other One is cool and among the best cuts of any recent vault releases. Love the Dark Star sandwich. This was a like winning lottery ticket last year. I love it.
As for #1, it's also very consistent, but it doesn't challenge my favorites for that tour, and so I just don't listen to it much.
#4: I'm on record hating that long patch, especially when there were several great versions of Help > Slipknot played around that time. Don't listen to it much, but would love another release from late '76.
I'm curious where others place these last five releases and why one would go to them. Here are my reasons:
Dave Pick #1: Lazy Lightning>Supplication is sublime. End of "He's Gone" is super fluid. The Other One jam through Around and Around, seamless.
Dave Pick #2: Jack Straw is notable, WRS is memorable, but the To Lay Me Down through Wharf Rat is exceptional.
Dave Pick #3: I listen to this one the most. Interesting. I actually go running to Bertha through Playing at least once a week. Breakneck Dead at it's best. Love this release and I didn't expect to.
Dave Pick #4: My least favorite. Too loose. Love the Sugaree, LLR, Playin combo (obviously), the Help>Slip>Franklins is an interesting journey and MNS is superb.
Dave Pick #5: Me and My Uncle>LLR is super locked in. Great first set material. The sandwich is spacey dead before they were too spacey. Eyes is wonderful. This is a solid set all in all.
Thoughts?

It sounds like there are some anomalies occuring during the crescendo section around the point of "dust off those dusty strings just one more time". Could there be a brief splice or two in there? Or some compression? Or perhaps it's just the vagaries of old tape? I'm wondering what others are hearing there, if anything.
sorry, double post
Nothing better than waking up on a saturday morning and having brand new records to listen to. The postman not only did leave DaP5, but also the new Jerry's live release (along with "Don't Let Go", which I took the opportunity to order). I have already spoken about DaP5 here. Regarding Jerry's release, it is a must-have: amazing sound, great performances, a complete pleasure. We Grateful Dead fans have to feel really lucky of having so many archival releases of such high quality. Some time ago I had the chance portunity of listening to the latest Frank Zappa's live release, the first of a series called "Road Tapes", recorded in 1968, and I must say the sound sucks when compared to Road Trips Vol.2 No.2 or DP 22 (and, obviously, Two From The Vault). We are given the chance of buying releases made with care and love, you can really tell that.
Having been lucky enough to see the Buffalo '79 show, and having heard a bunch of them (a couple were released with the Road Trips series, besides for most of Buffalo in RT vol. 1 #1), I would definitely second that. If I remember right the Cape Cod shows were hot. There were lots of high energy, great show in Oct/Nov/Dec '79.
I agree with the folks that like the sound and show. As for the cracked disc, you'll get taken care of, it just takes a bit. I had a duplicate Spring '90 disc and DaP 4 never showed up (one of the lost in transit copies). Eventually Dead.net resolved both problems.
I'm glad someone mentioned the 12.10.73 release, that is probably my favorite of the fall '73 releases so far. Most people didn't get in to the Download series and a lot might not even be aware it's available. It was remastered and sounds GRATE.
Here, here, to a fall '79 release. Not sure where to even start with that tour, but I think December first would go over well. An occassional 80's would be good too, although last year SIX full shows were released from Spring '90, which was basically the 80's (only better), and only 4 seventies shows got released (Dave's series), so I'm not pressed for more anytime soon.
I think all you complainers need to check yourselves. This is a top-notch release, a crisp, clean SBD from an amazing run. There is nothing wrong with releasing a great show...even if it flows in the continuum of other outstanding releases. Sometimes, one doesn't have to dig very deep to find the true gems.
right on the money with what you are saying. I'm not sure what your favorite era of GD is, but I really think we need some more 1979 releases, and releases from the early 80's.......
Yep this Dave's Picks 5 is really a knockout in every way. But I find it really hard to rate the fall 73 releases. They are all so good. I still think Dick's Picks 14 (Boston 11/30-12/1) is unsurpassed, maybe still my favorite. And let's not forget the download series vol 8 (Charlotte, 12/10/73).....
DAP5 arrived and it is all good. I have also been blessed with JGBvol1 arriving on the same date. Currently JGB is in heavy rotation. Also in the same week I received Europe 72 Radio Lux and Wigam shows. So much dead and Jerry in one week is mind blowing. I was one who did not receive DAP3 until a month later (in my opinion one of the best DAPs to be released). During this time I received emails from dead.net and even a phone call from a customer rep asking about service and if/when I received the show. I also ordered RT- the Wall of sound show and a pure Jerry show sometime in Sept. Needless to say I did not get the Wall of sound show until Dec (being from the tall corn state- the IA show rocks) but no Pure Jerry. What the kind folks of Dead.net did do for no pure jerry was give me $30 off next purchase and free shipping- thus the purchase of the Europe 72 shows. Yeah I spent more than the $30 but cant beat 6 discs of the dead. Overall I feel that is good customer service- we messed up- here is something for free- spend more money while your at it.
After repeated listenings to Dave’s Pick 5, I agree it is the best sounding 73 release. In terms of performance, I believe the Denver Road Trips release is the cream of the 73 crop (the bonus disc included as one of the top releases of a bonus disc). Winterland 73 is a close second followed by Dick’s Picks 1 and 19 in a dead heat. Dave’s Pick 5 would follow these in terms of an inspired performance. My opinion only.
Most likely Dave’s main responsibility is to sell 13,000 of these and any risk taking is probably not in the cards.
Having said this I still appreciate all the releases by Dave so far. Keep them coming. They are far superior to anything else being released.
By the way, in years past there would by 4 standard releases, a commercial release (Rocking the Cradle, To Terrapin, Crimson, White, and Indigo) followed by a box set. What happened to the commercial release? Did Crimson, White, and Indigo sink the commercial release (not one of my favorites)?
Packaging is just fine - in fact, I think it demonstrates a high level of responsiveness to posted concerns regarding quality (RTs) and envirnonmental issues. Anyway, the CDs go directly into their own slimline jewel cases - that is, after transfer to the peripheral hard drive.
1 Man: While I strongly disagree with your assessment as to the pedestrian nature of the preceding DaPs, your comment regarding RT 4.3 made me smile: Just this morning - prior to going out for a weekend long run - I pulled the Denver show off the shelf for the umpteenth time. I think it's an elite, and it occupies the upper echelon of my rotation along with other greats like DiPs 3/8/10/12/14/22/29 and the FW'69 & Winterland '73 + '77 box sets.
Dr. Rhino: Thank you for the expeditious replacement of the defective discs from my E'72 order - I still can't believe that I actually own the tour (thanks to the Black Friday special - WOOOOT! - though it was still rice and beans for a couple weeks to reconcile the budget).
Peace, Katie
It's so funny, I love the GD, they are the soundtrack to my life, but this latest release has me feeling kind of "meh", about it all. Great show indeed, but show me something. Sometimes I feel like Mr. Lemieux is in way over his head; a lot of the stuff he releases lacks passion. Dig deep brother, you have a heavy mantle to lift.
I feel like Mr. Latvala always had the pulse of the heads in mind when he put stuff out. David seems like he is trying too hard to impress someone.
Based on the videos I have seen, David Lemieux has the attention span of a gnat; he is easily distracted. Dig deep brother, or I may finally come to the realization that I have more GD than I'll ever need.
Get creative brother.
I think the liner notes in this set by Bill Walton are the best EVER. Truth be told.
And how I love the sound of this recording. Thank you for releasing this. It is just gorgeous. Just finished listening and am ready to put disc 1 back in and start over. Many, many thanks.
Just an FYI - the actual data is not stored on the actual disc. This is true of almost all commercially produced CDs, as far as I know. Any music player, i.e. iTunes, WMP, etc., retrieves the song data from a site like gracenote or musicbrainz. For the person who didn't have info in WMP it's probably a function of the database that your program checks as its default. It's not the discs themselves. Hope that helps!
I'm way behind the times, I put the disc in my cd player, car or otherwise, and just press play. If I want to know the song, I grab the case or booklet. Sure, it keeps life simple but part of me wonders if I'm missing out on some great fun. Oh well...
P.S. Tongue firmly planted in cheek...
I received mine on the release date and had the same prob. I sent all of the track listing to the Grace DB (which iTunes uses) so mine data would be there. I don't use Windows Player ever.

Arrived today - all fine no cracks.
25 Jan email notification, 31 Jan Federal Way, WA estimated delivery 04 Feb. Still no Dave's Picks 5. Both UPS and USPS customer service flag as LOST. Dead.net: wait 'til 20 Feb when the 15 - 18 day estimated shipping time expires. Requested a change in shipping and offered to pay, but if you live in AK there is only one option. Bummer, bummer, bummer. A Flat Rate USPS box is about $5.00 and ships anywhere in the good old USA. A business that restricts itself to only one means of shipping is just practicing bad business. Emailed Dr. Rhino today. Sorry for the rant, but need to vent. Everyone on this thread has their DP5 but me!!!!!!!!
does anyone else's copy have no album info embedded?
all the music is there, of course. but mine just reads as "Track 1" and "Unknown Album". apparently the media player can't pull the info from the www either. guess i'll just fill it all in.
update: itunes recognizes it but windows media player does not.
Have had DaP 5 (11/17/73) in rotation for a couple of days now. Made me think of RT 4.3, which is an all-time fave of mine. If I had to settle for only one of the two, I'd choose the RT hands down. Better song selection, much better energy, better big jams. The audio is even better (drums especially). So what if the segues in the PITB>UJB>MD sandwich are flawless? The jams there are tepid until the UJB reprise and the Morning Dew is botched. I'd much rather have the madness of PITB>El Paso>PITB>Wharf Rat>PITB>Morning Dew from 11/21/73 (the RT 4.3 big jam). My point is that Dave has picked 5 reliable shows that were relatively on the down-low. I know he'll pick a winner eventually, so I'm not going to quit now. It just surprises me that these new releases are not more consistently great.

shipped on feb 5. mail came just as i was leaving for work this morning and there it was.
was very concerned about disc 2's condition after reading about. and then especially so after seeing the packaging. but all was fine and there were no cracked discs.
now just got to rip and re-number for the memory stick. will be grooving all the way home from work tonight.
.
No James, it's not just you. This one seems to be as flimsy as volume 1. When I lay it down or on a shelf, the spine is not flush, it slants because it is not rigid enough, looks pretty much like crap and kind of defeats all the work which clearly went into the otherwise stellar packaging.
(as I mentioned earlier I love this release - so this is a relatively minor thing, but on the other hand, those of us buying these are doing so in part because we are collectors, we like how the look on our shelves, etc, and we want them to last a long time).

I hear you! Official release with all of their cool artwork, essays, artifacts and packaging are a win-win situation.
But, I will gladly take a free breakfast with each and every release! I tend towards healthy eating habits and avoid pork; however, I could go for a couple of those McDonald's sausage biscuit jobbers. You know the Hockey-Puck-On-A-Civil War-style biscuit. Do not forget the hash browns. . ..
