October 10- October 16, 2011

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, and a big Happy Birthday to Bob! Like last week, this week we're going to check out some early, mid and late 80s Dead.
Our first stop this week is on 7/5/81 in Oklahoma City, where we have the last song of the first set and the first four songs of the second set, a different second set sequence: Let It Grow; Samson and Delilah, Don't East Me In, Music Never Stopped, Ship of Fools.
Next is some first set music from 6/30/87 at Canada's Wonderland, just north of Toronto, where we have New Minglewood Blues, Candyman, Far From Me, Mama Tried>Big River. This was the most fun Dead show I ever attended. We all arrived at noon and rode the rides and hung out until show time. It was a Hannah-Barbara-themed park, so all of the giant characters walking around were from H-B cartoons. Trippy to say the least. And the show was extremely good. The tapes have a lot of audience mixed in, but the energy certainly shines through.
Finally this week we have the second set opening sequence from 6/19/89 at Shoreline, China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, Playing In The Band>Crazy Fingers>Playing In The Band. The band had the next night off as preparations were made from the big 6/21/89 pay-per-view broadcast.
Be sure to stop in next week for more tunes from the vault.

Drove up to these shows from Rhode Island 15 hours straight. Back in the days when all you needed was a license to get into Canada.
Have got a good chunk of the shows I attended except this one!
David............ Thanks for the memories!

Wow, you guys are really doing an amazing job getting us the best of the best. I hope that you will have many more years in the future. Thank you for all that you do to bring back these memories.
The slot machines and casino gambling offer some great bonus rounds with a lot of free spins adding to the excitement and profits.
it is nice to hear this part of the Kingsood-Toronto show.........the Good Lovin to close Set 2 is epic!!
a doe-eyed 15 year old I was at the time.......my first show was a good one!
Seems like there are issues with the Taper's Section, at least in terms of previous weeks (where is the second half of 2008, for instance).

Hmmm - I hope it's a temporary thing.
This is a very fine, laid back energy and show from the boys loved. Loved grooving with it, especially when they jammed back into Playin' from Crazy.
What can you say about the Shoreline. Built in the shape of a stealie on top of a garbage landfill. Only Bill Grahm could do it.
When was this renamed?
I freaked for about one second to find
you here. Phew.
Trippy to say the least.
Doctor call me crazy...
Some say I is some say
I ain't!
Roll those laughing bones!
Look out ~ Look out!
It's our birthday all week long!
Thanks ever so much!
Only here memories are shared
and made so precisely perfect!

PS Mama Tried!
I wanted to hear the '81 first but moved on the '89 after the link didn't work (glad there's abundance of choices!). Upon first listen to the '81, it's quite the bit 'skeevy' at first but it settles down a bit after the initial couple minutes. Nice stuff. Thanks to you, too DL!
I agree with Gr8fulTed--'good call ecb Even w the correct address, Let it Grow warbles a bit' and the quality of the 1981 selection is not as good as the other two. I hope the staff can fix the link on this page and deliver a steadier 1981 music stream.
Even w the correct address, Let it Grow warbles a bit

My first Canadian show. I went on tour in the summer of 84 after graduating college and before going to graduate school. It was the best of times. I had special tickets up in the front for Kingswood. The Band was rockin' and so were the Dead. It was an event filled road trip all the way to Alpine Valley. Never had such a good time in my life before. I am canadian and this show was special. Go Habs Go!
