Greetings, and welcome back to the Tapers' Section, this week we'll cover a dozen years in the Grateful Dead's history, 1977-1989.
Our first stop this week is on 5/12/77 in Chicago, where we have the bulk of the first set, featuring Bertha, Me and My Uncle, Tennessee, Cassidy, Peggy-O, Jack Straw, TLEO, Minglewood. The end of the first set and the bulk of the second set was included as bonus disc in the Winterland, June, 1977 boxed set.
Next, from a year later in the same city on 5/16/78, we have the big second set jam, made up of Estimated>He's Gone>Rhythm Devils>Comes A Time>Sugar Mag, Johnny B. Goode. This is the first Comes A Time in a year (since 5/21/77) and the only version of 1978.
Lastly this week we have the start of the second set from Irvine Meadows, just south of LA, on 4/29/89, featuring China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Looks Like Rain ; He's Gone > Spoonful. This run of shows would mark the final Grateful Dead performances at Irvine.

Is it me or has the Jam of the week feature been removed? This would be a shame as it was something I looked forward to every Saturday. Looked everywhere for it. Hope I am wrong.

I would love to hear more of this sound...any clues as to where to look? There's the "cryin' song" version of Looks Like Rain but what about other songs?
Someone mentioned in a post somewhere (can't remember where) that some of the early DP releases were being remastered and/or re-released. Anybody know what's up with that? I'd like to hear 5/22/77 in as good sound as possible. DP 3 sounds good, but not as clear as a Road Trips release.

.. with the sounds I hear coming from my head phones while jamming to the Chi show- 5.16.78. The transition from estimated into He's gone is pretty nice- very spacey beginning to He's gone. You can hear people in the crowd expressing their complete and utter satisfaction .. though subtle (and at times, not so subtle).

Location
the poor vocal mix at the start of Bertha allows you to hear the absolute brilliance of Weir's rhythm guitar playing - there can have been few better rhythm guitarists ever.
and, in passing, listening to Jerry's vocal on Peggy O makes me want to cry every time at his sad loss to us
