January 3 to January 9, 2011

Greetings, welcome to our first full week of 2011 here at the Tapers’ Section! We have some excellent 1971, 1972 and 1984 Grateful Dead music for you here this week.
Our first stop is on 12/4/71 at the Felt Forum in New York, currently known as the Theatre at Madison Square Garden. From that show, we have You Win Again, Me and Bobby McGee, Comes A Time, Smokestack Lightning. Of particular note is the excellent early Comes A Time, and a meaty, wonderful Smokestack. This December tour was Pigpen’s comeback after his hiatus from the band during all of the October and November, 1971 shows.
From less than a month later, on 1/2/72 at Winterland in San Francisco, we have Chinatown Shuffle; Tennessee Jed; El Paso; You Win Again; Big Railroad Blues; Mexicali Blues. We hope you don’t mind the double dose of You Win Again this week.
Lastly this week, we have the first set of 7/21/84 at Ventura County Fairgrounds, with a standard-for-time (and excellent!) first set list of Shakedown Street ; Little Red Rooster ; Althea; Me And My Uncle> Mexicali Blues; China Cat Sunflower> I Know You Rider ; Looks Like Rain; Might As Well. Very cool to see that mid-set China>Rider.
We hope your year’s starting well, and we look forward to a terrific 2011 here at the Tapers’ Section, and in the GD world in general. As always, we encourage you to write to us at the email address below.

What a hot 1st set from '84! The Shakedown jam has me boogying in my seat :) Great keyboard work by Brent with Jerry riffing right along.
Outstanding selections this week.
Happy new year, TS!
I was lucky enough to attend 7/13, 14, 15, 21, and 22/84.
i don't recall the Shakedown being very hot, but this sounds good. I do remember the mid-set C>R. sadly, they followed it with LLR, NOT one of my favorite GD tunes.
I hope you play the second set next week.
this is one of those shows that is hot, but doesn't get much discussion. thanks for playing it.

Thank you, David and greetings fellow Heads. I have yet to listen to the other tidbits, but it is so great to hear this pristine recording from the Felt Forum. The sound of Keith's acoustic piano is very sweet. It's nice to hear the work-out version of Comes A Time. Personally, I like the slower tempo Jerry & Co. settled on later. For me, You Win Again is seminal GD. I remember listening to Europe '72 over and over and over again and falling in love with the "sound" of our beloved boys. And there was something particularly raunchy about this song that fascinated me. The El Paso appearing on this tape isn't listed. And oh, that Smokestack! Although Pig wasn't contributing much on keyboards, his voice and harp playing never sounded stronger. Maybe the rest had done him good.
Can't wait to give the rest of the posts a listen.
