April 12- April 18, 2010
This week we're going to hear some music from the first half of 1972, specifically music from the Grateful Dead's seven night run at New York's Academy of Music, plus a little taste of Europe '72 Dead.
Our first stop this week is on 3/22/72, the second night of the Dead's residency at the Academy of Music, and we're going to check out the start of the second set, featuring Me And My Uncle ; Sugaree ; Chinatown Shuffle ; Playing In The Band ; It Hurts Me Too ; Brown Eyed Women ; El Paso ; Brokedown Palace. the big jam of this night featured caution, and was included on a bonus disc that went out with orders of rockin' the rhein in 2004.
From the next night on 3/23/72, we have a good chunk of the first set, made up of China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Black Throated Wind ; Chinatown Shuffle ; Brown Eyed Women ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Cumberland Blues ; Looks Like Rain ; Mr. Charlie ; Tennessee Jed ; El Paso ; You Win Again. that's a very rare first-set-opening China>Rider, for those keeping score at home.
Lastly this week, a good dose of Pigpen from Europe '72, recorded on 5/7/72 at the Bickershaw Festival and included on the 4-CD Steppin' Out with the Grateful Dead album: Good Lovin'. One of the best from a tour that included many great versions of the song.
Be sure to stop by next week for some more good ol' Grateful Dead.
great suggestion, just when i needed a new fix for the week! -and how many shows start with a ragin playin??! this is going to seed my day quite nicely...
but of course.. huge thanks to David as well!! choice material, somehow that 3/23 Chinatown Shuffle really popped for me, gonna get that tune into my repertoire for jammin. hadn't really felt it before in other version, but after that one i've been singing the hook since monday :D
-hope folks don't think me rude, just don't expect no help at all...
4/14/85 is a hot show. how about some 85 road trips???????
gotta love that GD June 85 & 7/1/85.
RELEASE THIS! Please.
wow, David, you've got all this great stuff in the vault and the only way we get to hear it is through this site. Man, get this stuff out there, raw or remastered, just get it out there so everyone can hear. This is just the best, please, do some second set stuff, I know they are just as good as this if not better.
Thanks for the 72
The string above, from 2/4/2008, offers more good Dead tunes from 3/22/72.
Archivist David L. just might have something in the Vault...
www.archive.org does have plenty of Grateful Dead to listen to, and many excellent audience recordings to download if you so choose. Archive does have a short audience clip of 3/22/72.

It indexes what has been played here in previous weeks. So in addition to what's playing this week, you'll find a fair bit of your desired 3/22/72 has been played here on the Taper's Section on various occasions. Hope this helps.
Good stuff this week!
Elwood, that's a tall order. The only releases of 3/22 material I know of have been from the Rockin' The Rhein bonus disc. Personally, I've not seen that material elsewhere. That bonus disc also included the 3/23 Dark Star.
I do highly recommend the 3/22 Playing In The Band. It's one of the last without Donna and is quite different than the version(s) on DP30.
Many thanks for the great show suggestions! However, I'm having difficulty in tracking down 3-22-72, since it doesn't appear to be a DP or Road Trip release. Showing just how new I am to the world of the Dead, is there anyway for me to get a hold of this show, preferably a sbd like that is streaming?
Yeah Baby, yeah!
DP30 is AoM72, I think. THAT is a good DP.
DL duz well.
I would love to see a 10-12 cd box set of the best of the rest from Europe '72. There is still a ton of gold to be mined!
